Dr Sue Leicester holds a PhD in clinical psychology, is a Gottman certified therapist and has been practising psychology for over 18 years.

Sue specialises in a number of areas including working with couples using the Gottman method and complex trauma. While she is skilled in a number of interventions her focus is on building the therapeutic relationship of trust, respect and care to reshape significant emotional experiences.  The therapeutic relationship becomes a workspace to resolve difficulties so the client can create a full and meaningful life lived with greater courage, compassion, and creativity.

Sue is eclectic in her practice and is skilled in a range of therapeutic modalities including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Relational Neurobiology of Trauma, Brainspotting (focused mindfulness), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy and Mindfulness.

In determining the methods and approach Sue uses with individual clients, she considers the following:

  • Working holistically Sue assesses the whole person, not just their symptoms or diagnosis.

  • Sue is flexible in her therapeutic approach and does not adhere rigidly to one model if this will not produce the best outcomes for her clients.

  • Sue considers psychological distress within its relevant context, which may be cultural, relational, familial, social, vocational, political or spiritual.

  • Sue often uses client feedback to assist therapy.

  • Sue believes excellent treatment outcomes are possible with the right therapeutic fit.

  • As humans we are imperfect and vulnerable. Real growth occurs when we learn to embrace both. Resistance to either keeps us stuck and uncertain.

Sue is passionate about her ongoing professional and personal development and she receives regular clinical supervision.  She also provides clinical consultation to other mental health professionals.
